Things have changed quite a bit since we first began dating as teenagers. Do the dating roles we learned back then still apply? In order to find out, we conducted some online dating research by surveying 50more users. We set out to find out how men and women really feel about dating in 2017. Is chivalry dead? Should men always pay? Let’s take a look at what we learned from the online dating research:
The first takeaway from this research is how men feel about making the first move. Surprisingly, 90% of men prefer women making the first move. While women slightly prefer men to make the first move, many are also comfortable with women making the first move. What does this mean? Both men and women should feel comfortable pursuing those they’re interested in, and they should both be more willing to leave their comfort zones a bit more. Since both men and women want the other to make the first move, they should both try to make that first move.
The second thing we’ve learned from the online dating research is that chivalry is still alive and well. Most men and women agreed that men should open the door for women on a date. In fact, men felt slightly more strongly in favor of this than women did. 90% of men either “strongly agreed” or “somewhat agreed” when responding to the notion of a man opening a door for a woman. 85% of women responded the same way. So, make sure to open the door for your next date.
Lastly, we learned that most men want to pay for dates. 72% of men thought the man should always pay for a date, while just 44% of women agreed. Interestingly, 56% of women preferred splitting the check or having the person who initiated the date pay for it. Since women also slightly preferred men making the first move, this could just be a kinder way of saying the man should pay.
The bottom line? Chivalry is still going strong, even in 2017. The online dating research shows us that chivalry doesn’t mean much when it comes to the first move, but it means a lot in other areas. And it means a bit more to men than it does to women!
