Having trouble finding the connection you’re looking for with online dating? Take a look at the words you’re using on your profile. We can’t emphasize the importance of drafting a stand-out profile enough, but we recently discovered something even we didn’t expect. People who are trying to find love online are more successful if they include this one word on their profile.
We’ve already showed you the words men and women are most likely to use on their dating profiles, but now let’s see how those words affect their online dating experiences. When comparing people who did successfully find love online and those who are still looking, a trend emerged.
The word most used by people with online dating success stories was love. So, if you’re looking for love, don’t be afraid to use the word! That may seem obvious, but the trend goes even deeper. Users who used words specific to what they were looking for were more likely to get it.
Men who use words that indicate an interest in long-term relationships tend to be more successful when trying to find love online. Words like romantic, relationship, and heart on profiles all proved to lead to more online dating success. Which is great, especially since men over 50 are more likely to include those words!
The same concept applies to women trying to find love online. Women who found relationships through online dating tended to use the word “relationship” 16% more often than those who are still single.
However, people who are still single tend to use language that’s indicates an interest in more short-term activities. Words like dinner, shop, hang, and travel tended to be used more by single people. These are all things that are relatively non-committal, and they affect the dating lives of those who use them.
Remember: this doesn’t always have to be true. You may write that you’re looking for someone to love and be in a relationship with, where you cook each other dinner and travel the world. That’s definitely a more long-term approach than just going to Applebee’s. Be patient too — just because you’ve now included words like “love” and “heart” on your profile doesn’t mean that Mr(s). Right will come knocking on your digital door tomorrow.
But it does give us a good sense of how we should approach online dating. It’s important to be clear about what it is you’re looking for and to make sure your words reflect that. It could just make all the difference in how successful online dating will be for you.
